Basic Assessment & Support in Intensive Care (BASIC)
Have you worked in Intensive Care Medicine and want to brush up on basic knowledge and skills?
If the answer is yes, then we would like to invite you to attend the next Wessex BASIC Course.
The course is mainly aimed at ACCS and CTs in anaesthesia, medicine, surgery and emergency medicine that are faced with an ICU job, but have little or no experience in Intensive Care Medicine. FY2 doctors working in ICU as part of their rotation are also welcome to apply. In addition Trust Doctors, who after years of covering Critical Care want to brush up on some basic knowledge and skills may find the course very useful. We also reserve a few places for senior ICU nurses (experienced Band 6 and Band 7).
We intend to equip you with the core knowledge and some skills required in your ICM post. Therefore the best time to attend is either just prior to, or at an early stage of, your placement. This will enable you to maximise your training and education in this very exciting specialty. It may also allay some of the anxieties you may have about working on an ICU.
The course consists of interactive lectures, small group tutorials and skill stations delivered by experienced Wessex Intensivists. In addition there is a comprehensive manual and a CD-ROM, which we will send out in good time prior to the course. This is a selection of the topics we cover:
In 2010 an enthusiastic faculty of Intensive Care Consultants from all over Wessex started running Wessex BASIC in order to enhance ICM training in the region. The course has been held bi-annually since with excellent feedback from candidates and instructors.
Wessex BASIC is supported by the Wessex Deanery Specialist Training Committees for Intensive Care Medicine and ACCS, and previous courses have been approved by the Royal College of Anaesthetists for 6 CPD credits per day.
BASIC originates from Hong Kong and is run in over 40 countries worldwide. It is endorsed by the UK Intensive Care Society, the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand. In Australia and New Zealand an introductory intensive care course is compulsory during ICM training and BASIC fulfils all the requirements.
Before attending the course we expect candidates to have read the manual in detail and to have gone through the CD-ROM. In order to pass the course candidates must attend both days, complete an online pre-course MCQ and pass a post-course MCQ paper.
We run the courses in central locations in Wessex in order to make it accessible to all trainees in the region as a non-residential event. The next course will be held at the beautiful Bartley Lodge Hotel in Cadnam in the New Forest. The non-residential course fee is £195 (£160 for non-medics). The hotel offers special delegate rates for anyone that would like to stay over, subject to availability (usually from approx. £60).
Study leave needs to be booked locally, and we would advise you to get in touch with your Intensive Care Tutor or rota master soon. All Wessex ICM tutors should be aware of the course.
